Many aquarium owners often find themselves puzzled over cloudy water, making it one of the most common concerns we encounter. The ambiguity stems from the fact that there are numerous potential causes for this issue. Nevertheless, by observing the colour and conditions of the water, we can pinpoint the cause and provide an appropriate solution.

  1. White or Grayish Water: If your aquarium water turns cloudy soon after set up, it is likely due to insufficiently cleaned gravel. The remedy is to empty the tank and rinse the gravel until the water is completely clear.

  2. Bacterial Blooming: If the water becomes cloudy weeks or months after setup, it’s often due to a bacterial bloom. It’s common for water to become slightly hazy during the first cycle as bacterial colonies establish to clear waste. This process can take a few weeks or even months, but the cloudiness will naturally resolve over time. Excess food or decaying plant matter can also cause the water to turn milky. Don’t worry too much about bacterial blooms. Most bacterial bloom cases can be resolved by removing uneaten food, decaying plants, and debris and performing regular partial water changes. Limiting feeding for a day or two to prevent excess food decay.

  3. Green Water: If your water has turned green, it’s clearly a sign of algae growth. It can be challenging to eliminate, but it becomes easier to address once you identify the cause.

    • Excessive Light Exposure: Overexposure to light can stimulate algae growth. Reduce the hours your aquarium light is on and position your aquarium away from direct sunlight.

    • High Nitrate Levels: Nitrates naturally increase as waste accumulates. Regular water changes and filter cleanings can help manage nitrate levels. Make sure your filter is suitable for the size of your aquarium. Avoid overcrowding your tank, as it can perpetually elevate nitrate levels.

Regular maintenance can solve the majority of cloudy water issues. This includes weekly 10-20% water changes, using high-quality food, and ensuring your gravel is thoroughly cleaned.
